Who are some of the writers that influenced Author Hood Chronicles to write, past & present?
Author Hood Chronicles
I was influenced by 4 authors. My biggest influence was Iceberg Slim. My grandmother knew him and as a kid I read all of his books from her. The second one is Donald Goines. He peeked my interest due to the comparisons many made between him and Iceberg. My third literary influence occurred while I was incarcerated. I picked up Master Of The Game by Sidney Sheldon and it was that book which broadened my vision for literature. So a big thanks to Sidney Sheldon for that. Finally, the fourth author is Terri Woods.  Her book True To The Game made me want to try my hand at street lit to see what I could do with it.

Now I want to ask u about your characters. How do you build your characters for your many great novels? Is there a process for you or do you spontaneously write and let the character develop as you are writing?

I visualize my characters before I even begin writing. I know real people who are really animated in reality so I utilize those personalities in my work. I always aim to create something that everyone can relate too. Far fetched lit bores me. Therefore, I just think of real events that have happened to real people I know.  At that moment, I can write about it and let the story take shape.

I notice that you are pretty candid about your life before you became an author with the street life and prison. How has these events shaped you as a writer?
Author Hood Chronicles
The street life is one I don’t glorify, but do appreciate. It made me smarter, ambitious, and gave me the mentality to grind as hard as I possibly can to make a way where there is seemingly no way. Prison snatched all of the fame, glory, and money that I made from the streets. I hit rock bottom, looked up, and found The Almighty. For once, I recognized a supreme authority that had better interests for me in life and allowed that understanding to guide my footsteps from the violent life to the respectable and mature one. Both, the streets and prison shaped my writing in every aspect.

The Urban Literature scene has taken the publishing industry by surprise. And I mean that the genre has made a lot of money for its authors and independent publishers. As an author in a competitive market, how do u feel about the popularity of the genre and how do you keep your mind focused on your writing and publishing in a field of many great writers? Are there any of the writers in the game that inspires you to compete with them; where if they write something you deem as great you close their books & say “Damn i gotta write something as great too”?
Author Hood Chronicles
I’m not the type to feel like there’s any competition for me because I’m me and all I do is me. Who can be better than me at that?  I’m not saying that to knock anyone or their work.  I’m saying it because I stay in my own lane. I write street lit, romance, erotica, drama, philosophy, religious, children’s coloring books, and whatever else that piques my interest.  I write what I feel and that’s all too it. As for the popularity of the genre, African American literature isn’t respected like the other genres. For whatever reason, it isn’t. As a force within this industry, we have yet to unify and challenge the things we dislike about Amazon and the like. Publishers and authors on the indie circuit smile when on the inside they are crying. We’ve been affected by the pay scale of Amazon and rulings but fail to challenge the machine. So as far as popularity goes, many more than some are just shucking and jiving on just nickels and dimes.

If asked by an emerging author of the urban literature game about your advice for success in the industry, what advice would u give to him or her?

Author Hood Chronicles
I always tell aspiring authors to self publish your own first book. It isn’t as costly as everyone thinks and it will give you a behind the scenes look at what is going on with your work. Publishers will tell you anything to try and profit off of your work. Its all about the profit with us all. Don’t ever forget that. Everyone is trying to profit but when you give them first dibbs at marketing and promoting your work and it flops then you’re gonna wish you tried it your way. Your first book is your first baby so take care of it as such. Every individual deserves to see what they can do on their own before jumping in bed with potential wolves waiting to prey on the less knowledgeable.

So if I am counting correctly, you have 19 books written & 3 in the works. At your level in the game most writers become guilty or suffers from criticism of re-writing the same story. You don’t seem to have that issue. How do you keep your readers interested with fresh material?
Author Hood Chronicles
I’m diverse. Worldhaven Agenda is my publishing company but it’s broken up into different departments to help the consumer know what genre they’re purchasing. For example, Worldhaven Passions at the head of my books let’s the reader know that this material is a part of the erotica division. Also, Worldhaven Enlightment indicates that particular book is a philosophical work. I had to do it like that because readers never knew what they were getting with one of my New books but bought it with faith that whatever it was it would be damn good like the last Hood novel.
